Identification
Nuthatches are quite unmistakable with their short-tailed, big-headed, fat-bellied shape, even if you don't see the blue-grey back, orangey underparts and long black eyestripe.
Habitat
Breeds and winters in mature woodlands, parks and gardens.
Behaviour
There are several European birds which scramble about on tree-trunks but only the Nuthatch with its unusually strong feet, can actually walk head-first downwards.
Migration
A mainly sedentary bird with some dispersal by young birds.
